The Share ShopA library of things

Volunteer

The Share Shop runs entirely on volunteers. No staff, no paid hours. Just people who rock up.

A rack of garden tools in the shed: rakes, brooms, shears and two cordless whipper snippers, with spare trimmer line hanging beside them.
A market stall table with board games, an ice cream maker and a boxed set of petanque balls, with information flyers laid out in front.
Three Share Shop volunteers in branded aprons behind a market stall, with an air fryer, a food dehydrator and a heat gun on the table in front of them.

What you'd actually do

Everyone does shifts.

On the counter, signing people up, checking things out, taking them back in and answering questions. The role is called Librarian, and it's what volunteering here means. There are volunteer squads too:

Inventory

Adding donations, photographing things, taking them out for maintenance.

Media & Events

Posting what's new and what we're after, and running stalls like Living Smart.

Volunteer support

Looking after each other: inductions, rosters, checking people are alright.

Committee

Meets four times a year and carries the legal responsibility. We need a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and Public Officer, plus ordinary members.

What we ask

Two shifts a month.

About 2 hours each, plus a little time for setting up and packing down.

Saturday mornings 10am–12pm, Thursday evenings 4:30–6pm during daylight saving.

Your first shift is an induction: the shed, where things are, what to do in an emergency, how the system works. You'll be on with experienced volunteers, and nobody expects you to pick it all up at once. People are still learning things a year in.

Fill in the form and someone from our Volunteer squad will be in touch. We may ask you to come in before your first shift.

Once you're in, you'll get a link to our roster. That's where shifts are posted and you claim the ones that suit.

Before you start

A few things.

Everyone aged 18 and over holds a NSW Working With Children Check, because young people volunteer here. It's free. You apply online, then take ID to a Service NSW centre, and it can take up to four weeks, so start early.

Apply for a Working With Children Check (opens in a new window)

Under 18? Get in touch before you sign up. The Check is only issued at 18 and over, so we'll sort out consent with a parent or guardian, and you'll be rostered with two adults. That includes anyone doing their Duke of Edinburgh Award with us.

Everyone agrees to our Code of Conduct, which we go through at induction.

You'll set up your own login for the roster, which is how you book shifts. The system we use at the counter is a shared login we'll show you on the day.
